Valentine’s Day is just around the corner – whether you’re spending it with your significant other or some friends, Columbus has got you covered. Trying to figure out your V-day plans can be quite stressful, especially if you’re a broke college student like myself. You can definitely find ways to celebrate and show your love on Sunday, February 14, without breaking the bank.
I’ve been doing some research in order to figure out my own plans, and I’d love to share it with you, Columbus. Here are just a few ideas I’ve found:
Visit the Columbus Museum of Art.
The Columbus Museum of Art is a beautiful and interactive place — and did I mention that admission is free on Sunday? I don’t know about you, but free plans are my favorite kind of plans. Go spend a couple of hours at the museum and then grab a cheap meal!
Go Ice Skating.
Ice skating is always a fun winter activity and it’s not too expensive either. Winter Park in the Arena District offers outdoor public skating for $5/person (skate rental included, cash only). It’s located in McFerson Commons, right across the street from Nationwide Arena. What better way to celebrate love than to watch the person you love fall on their butt? Make sure to check public skate hours before heading out.
Watch How to be Single.
Going to the movies is a simple, but classic, date idea. How to be Single comes out on February 12, just in time for Valentine’s Day. Whether you’re single and looking for a laugh with your gal pals or dragging your boyfriend to yet another rom-com, this should be on your date ideas list.
Eat a Local Brunch.
Columbus has countless, amazing restaurants that offer brunch, especially on Sundays. Sleep in a little and then go find a place that you love. Here are some of my favorite brunch spots:
- Cap City Fine Diner – This Cameron Mitchell restaurant is offering a special Valentine’s Day menu from 11am-3pm all weekend long. You might want to make a reservation first; Cameron Mitchell restaurants never disappoint.
- Katalina’s – This local cafe is definitely a place to consider. You can score a fan-freakin-tastic breakfast for around $10.
- Forno – Go grab brunch (pictured above) and a cocktail at Forno in the Short North. You can expect to spend $10-15, and they also take reservations.
- Bodega – Another delicious brunch find in the Short North. Bodega offers tasty mimosas and brunch from 11am-3pm on Sundays. You can also get half off shareables and snacks this Valentine’s Day.
Enjoy a Fancier Meal Out.
If you’re willing to spend more money on a nice night out, I highly recommend dinner at The Boat House at Confluence Park. They are offering a special Valentine’s Day menu that features entrees such as herb roasted prime rib, lobster and shrimp risotto, pan seared salmon, chicken picatta, and surf and turf. You should make a reservation in advance and expect to spend about $30/person.
Go to a Wine Tasting.
The Hills Market Downtown is offering a 10 for $10 wine tasting event on Friday, February 12, from 6-8pm. Go celebrate V-day a couple days early and discover a new wine you like. Choose from over 20 wines, artisan cocktails, and beers from local breweries. Their kitchen will also be open with a spread of snacks and appetizers. You can buy tickets online or in person if the event is not sold out. Whether you’re enjoying the company of your significant other or drinking to forget you’re single, wine is always a good option!
Spend Your Night at Franklin Park Conservatory.
Tour the Conservatory’s Orchid exhibition and warm plant collections on Sunday from 5:30-10pm while sipping wine, tasting chocolate, and listening to live music. A cash bar and small plates will also be available. This date will cost $15/person ($12 for members) and will include three wine and chocolate pairings. Tickets can be purchased online for this event as well.
No matter how you choose to spend your Valentine’s Day, I hope that it is filled with love and good company.
